“Amazing – Best Kept Secret in the Keys!”
Review of Pigeon Key Foundation & Marine Center on Trip Advisor
History of the Keys
The history of the Florida Keys is unique, and Pigeon Key is the heart of it all. The Pigeon Key Foundation is on a mission to preserve the historic island using the open campus to guide the public through the historical, environmental, and cultural significance of the Florida Keys through daily tours.
At one time, Pigeon Key housed the 400 workers who built the Overseas Railway, the brainchild of Henry Flagler, designed to connect Key West to Miami in the early 1900s. The five-acre Pigeon Key bustled with activity before and after the railroad was completed.
Today, the Pigeon Key Foundation inhabits the island. The organization is devoted to protecting the cultural history of the Florida Keys by promoting its healthy future.
While mostly a historic visit, the views offer breathtaking moments of understanding what drew workers over a hundred years ago.
“We had a private historical tour of the island with an excellent tour guide. We saw manatee, rays, black urchins, a shark, snapper fix, a barracuda, a Gumbo Limbo tree, and much much more. You could snorkel the island all around or just go out for a swim without worrying about cutting your feet on rocks or coral. Wonderful history and beautiful island.” Trip Advisor Review
